Florida requires 120 hours of approved training (80 classroom + 40 clinical) to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Training Program Requirements

Florida CNA programs must be approved by the Florida Board of Nursing. Training is available at:

  • Community colleges
  • Vocational-technical centers
  • Private career training schools
  • Some hospital-based programs

The training includes:

  • 80 hours of classroom instruction
  • 40 hours of supervised clinical experience
  • CPR certification (usually included in the program)

Certification Exam

Florida uses Prometric as its testing provider:

  • Written Test: 60 multiple-choice questions
  • Skills Test: 5 randomly selected clinical skills
  • Cost: ~$155 total
  • Results: Available online within a few business days

Background Screening

Florida requires a Level 2 background screening for all CNAs, which includes:

  • Fingerprinting (both state and FBI databases)
  • Screening for disqualifying offenses
  • Cost is typically $50-75 in addition to the exam fee

Renewal

Florida CNAs renew every 2 years with:

  • 24 hours of in-service training during the renewal period
  • Paid employment as a CNA during the certification period

Reciprocity

Florida offers reciprocity for out-of-state CNAs who:

  • Hold an active, unencumbered certification
  • Pass the Florida Level 2 background screening
  • Apply through the Florida Board of Nursing
