CNA Exam Day — What to Expect and How to Prepare
Exam day is finally here. Whether you’re taking the written test, the skills evaluation, or both, here’s everything you need to know to walk in prepared and walk out certified.
What to Bring
- Two forms of ID (one must be a government-issued photo ID)
- Your exam confirmation or scheduling letter
- Comfortable closed-toe shoes (for the skills test)
- A watch with a second hand (for vital signs — no smart watches)
- A snack and water for the break
Do NOT bring: Cell phones, study materials, or electronic devices into the testing area.
The Written Test
- 60-70 multiple-choice questions (varies by state)
- 90 minutes to complete (most people finish in 45-60 minutes)
- Questions are randomized — you won’t see the same order as your neighbor
- You can mark questions to review and come back to them
Written Test Strategies
- Read the full question before looking at answers
- Watch for absolute words — “always,” “never,” and “only” are usually wrong
- Look for the safest answer — when in doubt, choose the option that prioritizes patient safety
- Don’t overthink — your first instinct is usually right
- Answer every question — there’s no penalty for guessing
The Skills Test
- You’ll perform 3-5 randomly selected skills from a list of ~25
- Each skill is scored on a checklist — you must complete all critical steps
- A nurse evaluator observes and scores you
- You typically have 25-30 minutes for all skills combined
Skills Test Must-Dos
Every single skill should include:
- Knock and identify yourself — “Hi, I’m [Name], your nursing assistant”
- Explain the procedure — “I’m going to help you with…”
- Wash your hands — before and after, always
- Provide privacy — pull the curtain, drape the patient
- Check for safety — bed locked, call light within reach, bed lowered when done
Common Skills Tested
- Hand hygiene
- Blood pressure measurement
- Pulse and respiration counting
- Bed making (occupied and unoccupied)
- Patient positioning (Fowler’s, lateral, supine)
- Range of motion exercises
- Perineal care
- Ambulation with gait belt
- Feeding a dependent patient
Managing Test Anxiety
It’s normal to feel nervous. Try these techniques:
- Box breathing: Inhale 4 seconds, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4. Repeat 3 times.
- Positive self-talk: “I prepared for this. I know this material.”
- Ground yourself: Feel your feet on the floor. Notice 5 things you can see.
After the Exam
Most states post results online within 1-2 business days. If you pass, your name is added to the state nurse aide registry. If you don’t pass, most states allow you to retake the exam (usually up to 3 attempts).
You’ve studied. You’ve practiced. Now go show them what you know.
