Renewal
California requires 150 hours of state-approved training (100 theory + 50 clinical) to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. This is among the highest requirements in the nation.
Training Program Requirements
California CNA training programs must be approved by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Programs are offered at:
- Community colleges
- American Red Cross chapters
- Private vocational schools
- Some hospitals and skilled nursing facilities
The 150 hours break down as:
- 100 hours of classroom/theory instruction
- 50 hours of supervised clinical practice in a long-term care facility
Certification Exam
The California CNA exam is administered by Pearson VUE using the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) format:
- Written Test: 60 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes
- Skills Test: 5 randomly selected clinical skills
- Cost: ~$105 for written + $26 for skills evaluation
- Results: Available online within 10 business days
You must pass both portions to be certified. You have 3 attempts within 2 years of completing your training program.
Renewal
California CNAs must renew every 2 years with:
- Proof of 48 hours of continuing education (24 hours of in-service training)
- Active employment as a CNA during the certification period
Reciprocity
California accepts CNA certifications from other states through reciprocity if:
- Your certification is current and in good standing
- You pass a California criminal background check
- You complete a California-specific training bridge if your original training was under 150 hours
